Reading Technical Documents & Instructions

Goal: Today we'll practice reading, interpreting, and improving professional instructions.

After This Lesson You’ll Be Able To

  • Tier 1: Identify action words and sequence steps.

  • Tier 2: Edit and improve unclear directions.

1. Kick-Off (2-3 min)

Prompt: “When was the last time unclear directions wasted your time?”

Goal: Show that comprehension = safety + efficiency.

2. Core Concepts (5-7 min)

Mini Demo: Instructor reads a confusing instruction; students identify missing info. Rewrite it clearly as a group.

3. Guided Work Time (12-15 min)

Tier 1 — “Highlight the Actions”

  • Read a one-paragraph instruction.
  • Underline action verbs (install, secure).
  • Number the order of steps.

Tier 2 — “Instruction Audit & Redesign”

  • Follow a brief classroom “procedure” (e.g., setting up materials).
  • Identify 2 unclear steps.
  • Rewrite or diagram an improved version.
  • Exchange with another team to test revised clarity.

Output: Submit improved instruction sheet or diagram.

4. Reflection (2-3 min)

Exit Ticket (Schoology or Paper): “How does writing clear steps protect quality and safety?”
