After This Lesson You’ll Be Able To
- Tier 1 (9th-10th Grade): Recognize what makes feedback helpful and practice offering short, positive feedback statements.
- Tier 2 (11th-12th Grade): Use a clear framework to provide professional feedback that supports learning and improvement.
1. Kick-Off (2-3 min)
Prompt: Think about a time someone gave you feedback that actually helped you get better. What made it helpful?
Goal: Activate awareness of feedback as a skill that promotes growth, not criticism.
2. Core Concepts (5-7 min)
| Feedback Skill | What It Means | Practice Moves |
|---|---|---|
| Be Clear | Focus on one behavior or action, not the person. | “When you missed the deadline, the group had to rush.” |
| Be Constructive | Offer a way to improve or solve the issue. | “Next time, we could set a reminder two days before.” |
| Be Considerate | Use respectful tone and timing. | Give feedback privately and kindly. |
| Ask Before Telling | Make sure the other person is ready to listen. | “Can I share something that might help next time?” |
| Receive with Openness | Listen first, then reflect before reacting. | Say, “Thanks for pointing that out; I’ll work on it.” |
Mini Demo: Instructor role-plays two examples: one harsh and one constructive. Ask: “How did the second version sound different? Which would make you want to improve?”
3. Guided Work Time (12-15 min)
Tier 1 — Peer Practice: “Glow and Grow”
- Exchange short written work or class reflections.
- Write one Glow (what worked well) and one Grow (suggestion).
- Share aloud using positive tone.
Tier 2 — Role Play: “SBI Framework”
- In pairs, use the SBI method (Situation - Behavior - Impact).
- Example: “In yesterday’s meeting (Situation), you cut off classmates (Behavior), and it made it hard to hear their ideas (Impact).”
- Partners respond with “Thank you” and restate the feedback.
4. Reflection (2-3 min)
Exit Ticket (Schoology or Paper):
- What makes feedback “constructive”?
- What will you do differently the next time you give or receive feedback?
