Work Order — Lesson #21
Stage Time Purpose & Activity Instructor Notes
1. Kick-Off 2-3 min Prompt: "Where does math show up at work, even in creative or hands-on jobs?" Prep a short whiteboard list of examples (inventory, payroll, production, photography budgets). Encourage variety to show math's universality.
2. Core Concepts 5-7 min Teach three terms: Estimation, Percentage, Data Literacy. Instructor Modeling: Display a 5-row dataset (e.g., sales or attendance). Calculate a percent increase on the board. Explain what the number means—not just how to find it ("It shows growth or loss."). Ask: "Why does that matter to a supervisor?"
3. Guided Work Time 12-15 min Tier 1: "Quick Math Scenarios" – students solve 3 short workplace problems (budget, supply reorder, time calculation). Tier 2: "Mini Data Project" – analyze small dataset (e.g., order volume by week), calculate 1-2 metrics, and write a short Data Recommendation paragraph: "We should ___ because the data shows ___." Distribute printed or projected dataset. Encourage showing all steps and units. Coach groups to interpret—not just compute—by asking, "What decision would this number support?" Collect 1-2 examples to share.
4. Reflection / Exit Ticket 2-3 min "Why do all jobs require math and data literacy?" Tie to reliability: people who understand data make confident, defensible decisions.

  • Solve workplace math scenarios involving percentages, ratios, and estimation.
  • Interpret small data sets to make evidence-based recommendations.
  • Explain how numerical accuracy builds professional credibility.

Preparation: Print or project one small 5-row dataset for analysis.
